Gideon Freudmann Limited Availability
CelloBop
In the program CelloBop, students meet the music, musician and maker of the music; both the traditional cello and the modern-day electric cello. Gideon Freudmann combines classical charm with powerful contemporary technology, crossing stylistic boundaries and joining musical paths. Listeners experience the joy of classical, blues, folk, jazz, improvisational and original pieces. Participants learn about the history and construction of the cello and are exposed to the joy of songwriting and music making, the thrill of new technologies, and the importance of mastery, perseverance and creative self-expression.
Grade Levels: K-12

Sound Science
Both the artistic and scientific aspects of music are explored through an examination of acoustics, sound waves, intervals, rhythms and chord progressions - exploring the acoustic properties of the cello and the endless applications of digital technology.

String Improv
Gideon Freudmann leads string players (violin, viola, cello, bass) through a series of musical exercises and games in this non-traditional approach to making music. Students bring their own instruments, gather in a circle and soon learn how to create melodies, harmonies, strum chords and play a bluesy bass line. Most importantly, they learn how much fun it can be to play and invent their own music.
Grade Levels: 5-12

New England String Ensemble
String Fever
String Fever is an introduction to stringed instruments and classical music presented by four members of the New England String Ensemble. Students engage in a musical journey entwined with melodies and harmonies demonstrating how music connects with various subject matters. String Fever explores music as a means of expression and imagination with pieces such as Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Copland's Rodeo, Tchaikovsky's Arabian Dance, Arlen's Over the Rainbow and the theme to Harry Potter.

North Winds
Wind Works
Calling all students!  Learn to play an instrument early and often! The North Winds’ program is a great way to introduce a young audience to the unique instruments of the woodwind family. Enjoy five of New England’s top woodwind professionals as they perform an engaging mix of pieces from several countries and historical periods. Highlights include: the function of each instrument, how each instrument produces sound and concepts of composition such as melody, accompaniment, and style. The program concludes with a piece that calls on audience volunteers to perform with the quintet in a rendition of "Ragtime Dance" by the legendary Scott Joplin.  We have a blast and so do the listeners!

Add a Master Class or Band Sectional: Treat the entire school to North Winds’ "Wind Works" lecture performance. Then follow up with your choice of tailored workshops for individual instruments (including saxophone) or band sectionals. Instruction will focus on rhythm, breathing and phrasing, intonation, and practice routines.

Residency:
Winds of Change

This residency is designed for music students who have had exposure to wind ensemble (band) playing. North Winds uses works by Farkas, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Klughardt, Debussy, Ligeti, and Villa-Lobos to illustrate the development of style, form, and content in wind music from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Workshop options include master classes on individual instruments, chamber music coaching, and band sectionals.

George W. Russell Jr. & Co.
Clap Your Hands

Explore gospel, one of America’s most popular musical genres, through highlights of its various styles throughout history. The program demonstrates the rise and function of gospel music in the African-American community, and describes its roles as a mental release from bondage, a vehicle for communication in the Underground Railroad, and "common ground" during the Civil Rights Movement. Featuring everything from Thomas Dorsey spirituals of the 1930’s to the 1960’s hit "Oh Happy Day" by Edwin Hawkins Singers. For grades K-2 narration is condensed emphasizing the musical portion of the program.

Handel & Haydn Society
Voices of the Stage
Members of the renowned Handel & Haydn chorus present a unique, lively musical program to approach storytelling through various musical styles, including opera, oratorio and musical theater. There are works by Gluck, Monteverdi, and Mozart (opera), Bach and Handel (oratorio) and Bernstein, Loesser, and Waller (musical theatre).  Students will be transported through historical periods by vibrant songs from many countries.  Students actively participate both on-stage (student actors) and off-stage (musical questions) and can select the musical order of skits; this is an extremely hilarious show!

Made in the Shade
Jazz: America’s Music from New Orleans to New York
Made in the Shade will capture the imagination and delight of young listeners as they embark on a musical journey throughout America. Starting in New Orleans with Dixieland, they will make stops in Kansas City, Chicago, and New York to learn about other jazz styles such as swing, blues, bebop, jazz fusion, and Latin jazz. Students will also learn about the nature of improvisation and will have a chance to conduct the band.

Students will have the opportunity to perform with members from Made in the Shade and introduce new material to their peers in a culminating event.

Infinities Chamber Ensemble
Meet the Woodwinds with Peter & the Wolf
A fun-filled introduction to classical music and the woodwind family! Each instrument in the quartet is introduced with an engaging demonstration, followed by a foray into the parts of music - all with a healthy dose of audience participation.  The instruments then come to life in a lively presentation of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf,” performed with narration and costume.
Grade Levels: PreK-Grade 3

Roots Music Collective
The Roots of American Music
From its African origins to today’s popular music students explore the global influences and social forces that have shaped American music with three talented, young musicians. During the program, students learn how the musicians draw from distinct musical backgrounds to compose and play music together. This interactive performance illustrates how the music of early African Americans evolved from work songs and spirituals, and led to blues, jazz, country and eventually rock. The program culminates in a group songwriting experiment as the musicians take suggestions from the student audience to create an original work.

Let's Make Music

In this residency, children learn how to improvise and compose their own songs. Other topics include ear training, learning rhythms, building percussion instruments, and various music styles and history. Students will perform songs with their percussive instruments accompanied by Roots Music Collective members in a culminating event.
