Clap Your Hands

PreK-12 African-American music (spirituals, folk-blues, and gospel music) has influenced both the musical and political movements in America. This lively program demonstrates the rise and changing roles of music in the African-American community and describes its function as a mental release from bondage, a vehicle for communication in the Underground Railroad, and a “common ground” during the Civil Rights Movement. The program explores gospel music, one of America’s most popular musical genres, by highlighting its various styles throughout history. George Russell and his group feature everything from the Thomas Dorsey spirituals of the 1930s to the 1960s hit “Oh Happy Day” by the Edwin Hawkins Singers.

For grades PreK–2, narration is condensed, emphasizing the musical portion of the program.

CelloBop

K-12 CelloBop is a whirlwind 500-year history of the cello – its past, present, and future. Gideon combines excerpts from various periods for the cello repertoire with explanations about its construction and tone. He demonstrates how the conventional acoustic instrument is played, then wows students when he plugs in his futuristic electric cello, showing how it can create an even wider range of sounds and styles. CelloBop includes classical, blues, swing, jazz, rock, bluegrass, and spontaneously improvised music.

Sound Science

2-12 Sound Science is an energetic and enlightening examination of where art and science intersect. Demonstrating the tonal qualities of both the acoustic and electric cellos, Gideon explains the mathematical aspects of music such as how music is divided into beats, measures and phrases, and acoustic qualities including sound vibrations, pitch, and timbre. Using the electric cello and real-time digital effects, he shows how notes can be echoed, repeated, distorted, and augmented in many exciting and unexpected ways.

With humor, warmth, and scholarship, Jeff invites your students to relive our nation’s heritage through songs of Revolutionary War heroes, Appalachian clogging songs, sailors’ work songs, African-American banjo tunes, Irish fiddle tunes, cowboy ditties, and more! The Oregon Trail

3-12 All headed West! Through song, students learn of the culture, life, and times of the American people made famous in Francis Parkman’s 1846 book The Oregon Trail. Meet the railroaders, settlers on the Erie Canal, sailors of the Great Lakes, rafters on the Ohio River, African-American roustabouts steamboating on the Mississippi, Sioux hunters, and pioneers traveling overland on foot, horseback, and wagons.
