Jazz: America’s Music from New Orleans to New York

K-12 Made in the Shade captures the imagination and delight of young listeners as they embark on a musical journey throughout America. Starting in New Orleans with Dixieland, they make stops in Kansas City, Chicago, and New York to learn about other jazz styles such as swing, blues, bebop, jazz fusion, and Latin jazz. Students will also learn about the nature of improvisation and will have a chance to conduct the band.

Musical Mathematics     New Program!

K-3 Who knew math could be so much fun?! Dan and Crick, explore concepts from state and national math standards through lively musical examples: measurement, sets, geometry, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students also learn the practical use of math in music by exploring note value, meter and conducting, and by composing a new piece of music using measures, sets, and notes. Available for K–1 or 2–3.

Master Class for Band and Jazz Ensembles

6-12 Made in the Shade’s master jazz educators Dan Fox and Crick Diefendorf provide intensive master classes for your school’s band or jazz ensemble to explore section playing, dynamics and balance, riffing, call and response, improvisation, time and feel, and style.

Master Class Length: 45-60 minutes
Participants: 30 students
Price: $125 per master class (includes one artist)

Manguito

K-12 Experience the joyous music of Latin America such as the rumba, bomba, plena, and Dominican merengue. Five internationally known Latin American musicians take students on an interactive musical tour of the Caribbean as they play the rhythms of Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic on a variety of musical instruments. Students participate throughout the presentation via sing-alongs, clapping rhythms, playing instruments, and dancing.
In addition, this program provides students with an appreciation of the unique fusion of Spanish, African, and Native American cultures in Latino culture.

Wind Works

K-8 Five of New England’s top woodwind professionals introduce students to woodwind instruments and musical concepts of composition such as melody, accompaniment, and style. Additionally, students hear a diverse selection of music from several countries and historical periods. Audience volunteers perform with the quintet in a rousing rendition of “Ragtime Dance” by the legendary Scott Joplin.

Post-Performance Workshop and Master Class for Your Band Sectionals

6-12 Treat the entire school to North Winds’ Wind Works lecture performance. Then follow up with your choice of tailored master classes for individual instruments (including saxophone) or band sectionals. Instruction will focus on rhythm, breathing and phrasing, intonation, and practice routines.

Odaiko New England

Taiko Thunder

K-12 Odaiko New England demonstrates the ancient art form of taiko (Japanese drumming) and its importance in Japanese culture. This energetic and engaging program highlights kumi-daiko (ensemble drumming) and combines traditional taiko rhythms with dynamic movement and rhythms from other musical traditions. Students explore kata (drumming technique) and the concept of kiai (vocalizing energy), and also join the performers on stage to play the taiko drums.

Promised Land

The Immigrant Experience

K-12 Through song, Promised Land teaches students about the history of worldwide immigration to America that millions of immigrants sought for over four centuries. Students listen, learn, and participate in the odysseys of immigrants who found themselves on a new continent faced with overwhelming challenges and opportunities. Hear the multicultural sounds of instruments including the mandocello, bones, dumbek, guitar, banjo, jaw harp, tambourine, string bass, oud, penny whistle, fiddle, Native American flute, and spoons.

Roots Music Collective

The Roots of American Music

K-12 What are the origins of American popular music and how can its roots teach us about cultural identity in the U.S.? From African origins to today’s popular music, students journey with three extraordinary musicians to explore the global influences and social forces that have shaped American music. This interactive performance illustrates how the music of early African-Americans evolved from work songs and spirituals, and led to blues, jazz, country, and eventually rock. During the program, students learn how the musicians draw upon distinct musical backgrounds to compose and play music together. The program culminates in a group songwriting experiment where the musicians take suggestions from the student audience to create an original work.
