American Sampler
Travel with Jeff Davis into the history of rural America. With humor, warmth, and scholarship, Jeff invites your students to relive our nation’s heritage through songs of Revolutionary War heroes, Appalachian clogging songs, sailors’ work songs, African-American banjo tunes, Irish fiddle tunes, cowboy ditties, and more! Jeff accompanies himself on myriad instruments, ranging from the nose flute to a one-of-a-kind fretless banjo. Students join in on the fun with found instruments, such as bones and spoons.

The Oregon Trail
In 1846, historian Francis Parkman, then a twenty-three years old Bostonian just graduated from Harvard, traversed the continent, returned, and then wrote his famous first book The Oregon Trail. Listen to the songs of the people Parkman met on his trip: railroaders, immigrants on the Erie Canal, sailors on the Great Lakes, rafters on the Ohio River, African-American roustabouts steamboating on the Mississippi, pole-boaters struggling upstream on the Missouri, Sioux hunters, and pioneers plodding overland on foot, horseback, and wagons. All headed West!

Massachusetts!
View the history and geography of Massachusetts from a unique perspective through instruments, music and song: early colonial songs and tunes; textile mill songs from Lowell; maritime songs from the days of the tall ships; Portuguese fiddle tunes from Martha’s Vineyard; ballads from the farmers of the Berkshire Mountains and more. Jeff’s engaging presentation enables students to learn about the importance and impact of music in the culture and lives of the people of Massachusetts. The program is a wonderful complement to the standard Grade 3 curriculum.

States of the Union
Every section of the United States has distinctive music that is the result of geography, immigration, and history. With a full array of instruments and songs, Jeff will take students on a musical tour, illustrating the unifying similarities and interesting differences between the various regions and states of our country. The program demonstrates the amazing variety of cultures in America, from Scandinavian tunes and songs from Minnesota to Anglo-American ballads from the Appalachians, from French-Canadian tunes from New England to African-American banjo songs from Mississippi. The program is a perfect companion for the standard Grade 4 study of States and Regions and can be adapted to the specific academic needs of individual schools.

Add a Post Performance Workshop
Jeff Davis’ post performance workshops provide students with activities related to the assembly program themes. They include hands-on activities (a musical spoons lesson, the singing of a sea-shanty while raising a “sail”), the introduction of a few folk new instruments, more singing, and much more time devoted to questions and answers. Oregon Trail workshops focus on westward movement; American Sampler, Massachusetts!, States and Regions workshops can focus on the most recent American history studies of any particular class, such as early colonial days, the Civil War, or Massachusetts history.

American Folk Traditions

Jeff Davis’ residencies focus on the folk process and oral tradition through folk instruments, music, tales, and songs. Sessions include hands-on activities (a musical spoons lesson, the singing of a sea-shanty while raising a “sail”), an introduction to a variety of folk instruments, singing, relevant historical information, plus time devoted to questions and answers. Residencies can be tailor-made to focus on school’s area of interest from themes Oregon Trail, American Sampler, Massachusetts!, States and Regions assembly programs.

Manguito

Experience the joyous music of Latin America such as the rumba, bomba, plena, and Dominican merengue. Five internationally known Latin American musicians take students on an interactive musical tour of the Caribbean as they play the rhythms of Puerto Rico, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic on a variety of musical instruments. Students participate throughout the presentation via sing-alongs, clapping rhythms, playing instruments and dancing. In addition, this program provides students with an appreciation of the unique fusion of Spanish, African, and Native American cultures in Latino culture.

Residency
Mambo Time

Instructors from Manguito introduce students to the rich Afro-Latin musical tradition. Students will learn rhythms from a variety of Latin styles of music, including the rumba, bomba, plena, and merengue. The culminating event is a performance of the students and the artists. For Bands and Orchestras: After an introduction to the rich Afro Latin musical tradition, students work with a Latin rhythm section and present a joint performance of Mambo and Latin jazz arrangements.

Promised Land

The Immigrant Experience
Promised Land celebrates diversity in America, and validates the uniqueness of each individual by weaving a rich tapestry of personal stories and songs from many cultures represented in today’s world. Trace the story of immigrants who left the "Old World" to search for a better life in America, the "Land of Opportunity." Sing along and listen to the odysseys of people who found themselves on a new continent, faced with overwhelming challenges and opportunities. Hear the sounds of many instruments, including the mandocello, bones, dumbek, guitar, banjo, jaw harp, tambourine, string bass, recorder, penny whistle, fiddle, Native American flute and spoons. Discover your own stories as you participate in this musical voyage.

Odaiko New England

Taiko Japanese Drumming
Odaiko New England demonstrates the ancient Japanese art form of taiko Japanese drumming and its importance in Japanese culture. This program highlights kumi daiko (ensemble taiko drumming), and combines traditional taiko rhythms with dynamic movement and rhythms from other musical traditions. Students explore kata form (drumming technique) and the concept of kiai (vocalizing energy), and join the performers on stage to play the taiko drums.

Cantabrigia Brass Quintet

Back to Brassics
No instruments are more suggestive of power and triumph than those in the brass family. This superb quintet, now with Young Audiences of Massachusetts for over thirty years, explores a rich brass repertoire that spans four centuries. With diverse expertise --including experience in Broadway shows, symphonies, opera, ballet, and jazz -- these five musicians introduce students to the basics of music and this colorful instrument family including a performance on garden hoses!
Grade Levels: K-5

Sounding Brass
Sounding Brass is for older students or for those who have seen the "Brassics" program. This program includes performances on early brass instruments demonstrating their historic uses and technological development culminating in a performance on five garden hoses. The program also includes examples of early and contemporary jazz, and a segment highly appropriate to teens on how music expresses the many aspects of love: joy, anger, bewilderment and grief, featuring selections from Bernstein’s West Side Story.

Sumaj Chasquis

Traditional Bolivian Music: Indians Discovered America
" A tribute of love and respect to our ancestors and children"
Sumaj Chasquis, meaning "good messengers," brings together Bolivian Indian and Mestizo musicians to share the enchanting culture and music of the Bolivian Andean Highlands, taking the audience on a chronological tour from the pre-Inca time to the post Spanish conquest era. The message of this hauntingly beautiful music is conveyed in three languages (Aymara, Quechua and Spanish) and on native Bolivian instruments. Students participate with the musicians throughout the program - discovering the traditions, legends, and dances of Bolivia - and learn how music has remained a cultural and spiritual center in the soul of the Aymara and Quechua peoples, even against the destructive powers of time and conquest.

Karim Nagi

Arabic Music, Dance and Culture
Join Egyptian-American Karim Nagi on an engaging, high-energy journey to learn about Arab and Muslim culture through a variety of traditional instruments, folk music and traditional dance. Karim uses authentic costumes, maps, Arabic words, lots of audience participation and humor as he enlightens his audience about a captivating world beyond the headlines. Karim is a master percussionist and dancer who likes to have fun with his audience! Students will clap unique rhythms, dance and celebrate as they learn about these amazing and ancient cultural traditions. A former faculty member of the New England Conservatory of Music, Karim now performs nationwide to great acclaim with the SHARQ Arabic Music Ensemble.
