Story Telling through Song with Opera Boston
From its origins in Italy in 1600 through today's Broadway hits such as Wicked and West Side Story, opera has delighted audiences with its unique fusion of music, text, theater and visual art. This rich interdisciplinary art form offers students multiple points of entry and engagement, including story creation, communication though song (rhythmic language), and the creation of visual arts through scenery, props and costumes.

Sandy Kiefer

Talking Cello
Up close and personal! Story telling and sound effects demonstrate what a cello can do. The one performer-one classroom approach gives kids a hands-on look at music making. Cellist, Sandy Kiefer, demonstrates how music and words connect by telling a story using special sound effects of the cello. The words of the story are then eliminated and only the sound effects remain, allowing children to trace the story by listening. Next, students write their own story as a group, which Sandy performs on the cello. During this interactive program, students use finger math, writing, and drawing skills. Follow up worksheets are left with each class. Sandy Kiefer, educator and cellist, is currently the Suzuki cello teacher at Longy School of Music and professor of music at the University of Rhode Island. She designed this engaging program specifically for younger students.
