Read Between the Lines
This workshop integrates weaving with language arts. Using inexpensive, readily available weaving materials, students will create weavings that become a threshold for a piece of writing, as well as using a piece of writing or a story as an inspiration for a weaving. The process of moving from writing to weaving and back, promotes writing and reading skills, as well as fine motor skills, in students of all ages. Read Between the Lines is a magical process for self discovery, and will produce successful and surprising results for every artist/author.

Mandala Community Weaving
Students weave togethe to create a circular weaving called a mandala. Each student will create a clothespin figure representing themselves or perhaps someone from another culture or time in history. These figures then join together around the woven mandala. Each student will also create a clothespin figure to take home with them. Themes for the mandala can be integrated into social studies, history, and science and language arts curriculum. As a creative process, each Mandala Community Weaving project grows from the spirit of the group that creates it. From the colors of the weaving, to the representations of people, to the texture of the weaving, the completed mandala is a true reflection and celebration of each community.

RESIDENCY
It Takes a Community to Weave a Tapestry

The ancient Greeks believed that a woven cloth could tell stories in a unique and magical way. In this residency, students will contribute to a collaborative weaving project using the metaphor of weaving to share and tell stories. A woven fabric created by your school will be stronger and more beautiful when all the contributing strands collaborate, creating a true fabric of community. Themes for the actual tapestry can be integrated into social studies, history, science and language arts curriculum.
Grade Levels: K-12
